  #62 3024 Recordings/ Martyn, Kode 9, dBridge & Jon Convex – Hosted by SP:MC

Now, we’re assuming here, but Martyn probably named his label 3024 because he figured that would be the year when it’s releases may no longer seem relevant in a day-to-day context. Well, maybe he sold himself a little short. His taste and production style is so diverse, he’s just going to be great forever! That’s something pretty rare in electronic music – so we’re feeling the need to stream this guy, and some stuff that he’s into, all over the internet. He has a new album out, so prepare your ears for making you want to pre-order shit.

Look out for the podcast for this one

S.P.Y - FABRICLIVE x Marky & Friends Mix  → cdn.official.fm

Artist: S.P.Y
Title: FABRICLIVE x Marky & Friends Mix
Date: 18.07.2011
Size: 135 mb

No matter which style of drum & bass tickles your bassbins the most, S.P.Y is a name you would have more than likely come across in recent years, having notched up a hearty list of top releases on a variety of high profile labels from Metalheadz to CIA.

Relocating from Sao Paulo, to the less sunnier climes of London in 2003, it wasn’t long before the DJ found his feet within the capital’s drum and bass scene. Having taken time to explore and go on to master the art of production, he let his newly honed skills do the speaking, with his beats quickly attracting attention from the genre’s tastemakers including Goldie and Marcus Intalex. Several years later and today, S.P.Y has obtained a level of recognition few can claim, a favourite amongst his peers; an artists’ artist, having illustrated the extraordinary ability of being able to to churn out quality tune after tune. Of course a fact testament to this is that he is also no stranger to our venue, having become a choice selector for several of our resident drum and bass nights, Critical, Playaz and Soul:ution.

In time for this rare occasion when both of Brazilian’s finest drum and bass exports and long time collaborators, Marky and S.P.Y will be sharing the same London line-up when the two play together in Room One this Friday, S.P.Y’s delivered this exclusive promo mix. Beginning with one of his most famous tracks to date, the chillingly beautiful and anthemic ‘By Your Side’, the one hour mix takes us on a musical journey typical of S.P.Y’s DJ sets; teasing in classics amongst his gnarly trademark sound thats flavoured with rumbling basslines and thumping drums. Take our advice; play this loud.

Martyn’s new album, Ghost People.

A full press release has been sent out for Martyn’s new album, Ghost People.

The record is 11 tracks long, with Kode9 collaborator Spaceape appearing on opening track ‘Love and Machines’. It is, according to the press release, a lot less concerned with “sorrows and melancholy” than Martyn’s first album Great Lengths.

“For this album”, Martyn claims, “I chose things that are further away from me: the Ghost People theme. There are references to DJing in general. Not the jet-set DJ life, but the old Paradise Garage DJ life, where people want to share and play the music they really love, regardless of if it’s trendy. Nothing fancy or flashy. Just back to the roots.” The press release goes on to claims that the album’s inspiration comes from “the old school mentality of connecting the dots, much like how Ron Hardy would tweak a soul track into a house groove, or [how] Goldie sent processed breakbeats far into the future.”

The title, Ghost People, is apparently a reference to “passionless DJs and producers … plastic, hollow shells that focus only on the in-the-now grooves or keeping in line with trends.” Another heavy influence on the record is “being on the road for a long time, and seeing how you cope with situations … I try to zen my way through it, and just stay focussed on my music.”

There is also a live show played with 3024 visual director Erosie, where the album’s artwork will be recreated in a live setting.

Ghost People will be released on October 10 through Brainfeeder.
